What do you need for Spain?

Step 1 of 4

Where were you living when the records were generated?

What Spain requires: FBI check, apostille, and certified translation

Spain is a member of the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention. For any official document from the United States — including criminal background checks — Spain requires a federal apostille issued by the U.S. Department of State, not consular legalization.

For visa and residency applications (non-lucrative, golden visa, work permit, student visa, family reunification, or the 2026 extraordinary regularization), Spanish authorities specifically require:

  1. FBI Identity History Summary — the federal criminal record covering your entire US residence history
  2. Federal apostille from the U.S. Department of State (not a state Secretary of State)
  3. Certified Spanish translation by a sworn translator accepted by Spanish authorities

We handle all three steps in a single coordinated service — no need to manage multiple providers or navigate government procedures alone.

Who needs this service?

🇪🇸 Spain visa & residency applicants

Applying for a non-lucrative visa, golden visa, or long-term residency in Spain? Spanish authorities require an FBI background check with a federal apostille — and a certified Spanish translation. We handle the full chain, remotely.

📋 2026 regularización extraordinaria applicants

Spain's 2026 extraordinary regularization program requires a criminal record certificate with apostille from every country of residence for the last 5 years. If you lived in the US, the FBI check is mandatory.

✈️ Latin Americans relocating to Spain

Whether you're from Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, or any other country and have spent time in the US, you likely need both a US FBI check and your home country's certificate — apostilled and translated.

The 90-Day Rule: Your Critical Window

The clock starts on the issuance date — not the apostille date, not the translation date.

⚡ Pro tip: Submit to Extranjería as soon as the full document package is ready — do not wait until near day 90.

⚠️ Warning: Many applicants lose months of work because the certificate expires while waiting for apostille or translation. Start early.

⚠️

Common Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected

Apostilling FBI documents at a state Secretary of State — FBI documents are federal. Only the US Department of State in Washington D.C. can apostille them.
Sending state police checks (Florida, Texas, NY) instead of FBI — Spanish Extranjería requires the FBI federal check for US residence, not state-level records.
Apostilling Canadian documents as if Canada were a Hague member — Canada is NOT in the Hague Convention. The correct path is consular legalization, not apostille.
Using a non-MAEC translator for any country — Spain requires a perito traductor with MAEC credentials. Any other translator will be rejected.
Starting the process too late — Venezuela needs 3–4 months, Canada 2–3 months, USA 1–2 months. The 90-day window starts at certificate issuance, not at submission.
Thinking the 90-day clock starts when you apostille — it starts at the certificate issuance date in the originating country. Apostille and translation time reduce your window.

We review your documents before submission to catch every one of these errors before they cause a rejection.

Federal Apostille (U.S. Dept. of State) U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications 4–8 weeks standard / 5–7 days expedited FBI documents are federal, so only the US State Dept. — not state offices — can apostille them.

Copy of valid passport or government ID Applicant Current Must match exactly the name used on the FBI background check request.

Common reasons for rejection — and how we prevent them

Most rejections are caused by avoidable errors. Our pre-submission review catches every one of these:

  • Wrong apostille authority — FBI documents are federal records. Only the U.S. Department of State can apostille them. Many clients mistakenly go to a state Secretary of State and get rejected.
  • Expired FBI certificate — Spanish consulates typically require the certificate to be issued within the last 3–6 months. We flag this and coordinate timing with your application date.
  • Missing certified translation — A plain translation is not accepted. Spain requires a sworn/certified translation from a qualified translator. We only use translators whose credentials Spanish authorities recognize.
  • Name mismatch — the name on the FBI check must match your passport exactly. Discrepancies — including middle names or accents — cause immediate rejection.
  • Incomplete fingerprint card — poorly rolled fingerprints or missing fields cause FBI rejections that add weeks to the process. We provide full fingerprinting instructions and review your card before submission.

How the process works

1

Send us your visa or residency requirement details. We confirm exactly which certificate is needed (federal FBI check or state-level), explain fingerprinting, and quote a firm price and timeline.

2

We guide you to a fingerprinting location or mail you a fingerprint card. Once complete, we submit your request to the FBI CJIS Division on your behalf and track every status update.

3

As soon as your FBI certificate arrives, we submit it to the U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications for the federal apostille — the only valid apostille for FBI documents.

4

Your apostilled FBI certificate is translated by a sworn translator and returned to you by express international courier, ready to submit to Spanish authorities.

FW
FBI Watermark Printing Issue

from USA to International

Apostille
The problem was…

An applicant printed their digital FBI background check at home, but the required pale blue Department of Justice watermark did not appear on the paper.

We solved it…

To avoid rejection by the apostille office, the applicant had to use a professional printing service to ensure the watermark was completely visible.

Result

Document accepted after professional printing.

EF
Eczema Fingerprint Case

from USA to Spain

Apostille
The problem was…

A visa applicant's FBI fingerprint cards were repeatedly rejected as unreadable due to severe eczema deteriorating their finger ridges.

We solved it…

The applicant had to persistently submit physical ink prints through an approved channeler until the FBI accepted the best possible version.

Result

FBI check obtained after multiple submissions. Visa approved.

ER
Expunged Record Blocked Visa

from USA to International

Apostille
The problem was…

An overseas work visa was blocked because an expunged misdemeanor from 2009 still appeared as 'record restricted' on the applicant's FBI background check.

We solved it…

The applicant had to provide additional documentation to prove good behavior, as immigration authorities require full disclosure regardless of domestic expungement.

Result

Visa approved after providing conduct documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to travel to the US to get the FBI background check?

No. The FBI accepts fingerprint cards submitted by mail from anywhere in the world. We guide you through the fingerprinting process at a local provider in your country (or at a US embassy) and handle all submission logistics remotely.

Will Spain accept a US FBI apostille for my visa application?

Yes. Spain is a member of the 1961 Hague Convention, so a US federal apostille is the correct — and required — form of authentication for FBI documents used in Spanish visa and residency proceedings. No consular legalization is needed.

Is a certified Spanish translation required by Spain?

Yes, Spanish immigration authorities require a certified translation into Spanish from a sworn translator. We include this in our full package. The translation is prepared after the apostille is attached so it covers the complete apostilled document.

How long does the entire process take?

Standard timeline is 15–21 business days: FBI processing (10–14 days) + federal apostille (4–6 days) + certified translation (1–2 days). With our expedited service, total time is typically 10–12 business days.

My FBI check is already done — can I just get the apostille?

Yes. If you already have a valid FBI Identity History Summary, we can submit it directly for the federal apostille at the US State Department and add the certified translation. Share a scan with us and we'll confirm eligibility.

What if I lived in multiple US states?

The FBI federal check covers your entire US history regardless of which states you lived in — it pulls from the national database. You only need one FBI check, not separate state checks, for Spain visa purposes.

How long is an FBI background check valid for Spain?

Most Spanish consulates and immigration offices accept certificates issued within the last 3–6 months of your application date. We recommend starting your order as soon as you have a confirmed application date to avoid expiry.

What does the full package cost?

Our FBI check + federal apostille + certified Spanish translation package starts at $249. Rush processing is available. Contact us for an exact quote based on your timeline and whether you need single or multiple copies.
