What do you need for the UAE?

Step 1 of 4

When was your document issued?

What changed in 2021 — and why it matters

Before March 14, 2021, documents used in the UAE had to go through a lengthy consular legalization chain — notarization, state authentication, US State Dept. authentication, then UAE Embassy legalization. This could take 6–10 weeks and cost hundreds of dollars per document.

Before March 2021 (old chain) Notarization → Secretary of State → US State Dept. → UAE Embassy → UAE MOFA
6–10 weeks · High cost
After March 2021 (current) Apostille from issuing country (+ Arabic translation if needed)
1–3 weeks · Lower cost

The UAE still requires Arabic translation for many purposes, and some authorities have not fully transitioned — but the core authentication step is now simply an apostille. We confirm the exact requirement for your case.

Who needs this service?

💼 Professionals relocating to the UAE

UAE employment visas require authenticated documents — now apostille-based since 2021. Background checks, diplomas, and professional certifications from the US and other countries need apostille and often Arabic translation before UAE submission.

🏢 Businesses registering in the UAE

Company documents used for UAE free zone or mainland registration require authentication. Since 2021, apostille covers most purposes — but some UAE authorities still require additional MOFA steps. We advise on your specific registration requirements.

👨‍👩‍👧 Families and personal matters

Marriage, divorce, and family-related documents used in the UAE often require apostille and Arabic translation. UAE family courts are specific about document authentication standards.

Required documents

Original document Issuing authority Before process starts For documents issued after the UAE joined the Hague Convention (March 14, 2021), an apostille is valid. For older documents or specific purposes, the UAE Ministry may still require additional verification.
Apostille from issuing country (post-2021 documents) Competent apostille authority in issuing country 1–4 weeks (varies by country) Since the UAE joined the Hague Convention on March 14, 2021, apostilles from Hague member countries are now valid for most UAE purposes.
Certified Arabic translation (if required) Qualified translator (UAE-accepted) 2–3 business days The UAE often requires certified Arabic translation for documents used in employment, business registration, and family law matters.
UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation (legacy / specific cases) UAE MOFA Varies Some UAE authorities still request MOFA attestation even for apostilled documents — particularly for employment and business registration. We advise on whether this applies to your case.

How the process works

1

The UAE situation requires careful assessment — apostille is now valid, but not all UAE authorities have fully transitioned. We confirm exactly what your specific UAE purpose requires: apostille only, apostille + translation, or additional MOFA attestation.

2

We obtain the apostille from the correct authority in the issuing country. For US documents: federal or state apostille as appropriate. For Latin American documents: the relevant country's apostille authority.

3

If your UAE purpose requires Arabic translation — common for employment, company registration, and family matters — we arrange certified translation by UAE-accepted translators.

4

Your apostilled document (and translation if needed) is delivered ready for use in the UAE. For cases requiring additional MOFA attestation, we coordinate that step as well.

Frequently asked questions

Did the UAE join the Hague Apostille Convention?

Yes. The United Arab Emirates acceded to the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention with effect from March 14, 2021. This was a significant change — documents authenticated with an apostille from Hague member countries are now legally valid in the UAE for most purposes. This replaced the previous multi-step consular legalization chain.

Does that mean I no longer need UAE consular legalization?

For most purposes and for documents issued after March 2021, yes — an apostille is sufficient. However, some UAE government authorities (particularly Ministry of Human Resources for employment and MOFA for certain business registrations) still follow legacy attestation workflows or require additional MOFA attestation even for apostilled documents. We confirm what your specific case requires.

What about documents issued before March 2021?

Documents issued before the UAE's accession date (March 14, 2021) that were previously processed through consular legalization remain valid. For new submissions using pre-2021 documents, the apostille route is now standard, but some UAE authorities may ask about the authentication date. We advise case by case.

Does the UAE still require Arabic translation?

Yes. While the UAE now accepts apostilles, it still commonly requires certified Arabic translation for employment visas, business registration, and legal proceedings. The translation does not replace the apostille — both are often required. We offer combined apostille + Arabic translation packages.

Which countries' apostilles does the UAE recognize?

The UAE recognizes apostilles from all 125+ Hague Convention member countries, including the US, EU countries, UK, and most Latin American countries. If your document comes from a non-Hague country, the old legalization chain is still required.

How long does UAE document authentication take now?

With the apostille route, total time is typically 1–3 weeks (depending on the issuing country's apostille timeline) plus 2–3 business days for Arabic translation if needed. This is significantly faster than the previous consular chain, which took 4–8 weeks.
