What US document do you need for UAE?

Step 1 of 4

When was your US document issued?

US → UAE: before and after 2021

Before March 2021 (old chain) Notarization → Sec. of State → US State Dept. → UAE Embassy → UAE MOFA
6–10 weeks
After March 2021 (current) US Apostille (+ Arabic translation if needed)
2–4 weeks

Who needs this service?

💼 American professionals moving to the UAE

Since 2021, UAE employment visas require apostilled US documents — not the old consular legalization chain. This is significantly faster and cheaper. Background checks, diplomas, and professional certifications from US institutions need apostille and often Arabic translation.

🏢 US businesses in UAE free zones

American companies registering in Dubai or Abu Dhabi free zones need apostilled corporate documents. Since 2021, a US apostille from the Secretary of State or US State Dept. is the standard route. Some free zones may still request additional MOFA attestation.

👨‍👩‍👧 American families in the UAE

US birth certificates, marriage certificates, and divorce decrees used in UAE family proceedings need apostille and Arabic translation. UAE courts are specific about authentication standards — we ensure your documents meet current UAE requirements.

Required documents

DocumentIssuing authorityEstimated timeNotes
Original US document (notarized) Issuing authority + US notary public Before process starts Documents must be notarized before apostille submission.
Secretary of State authentication (for state documents) Secretary of State — relevant US state 5–15 business days Required for state-issued documents before US State Dept. apostille.
US Apostille (State Dept. or Secretary of State) U.S. Department of State or Secretary of State 1–3 weeks Since UAE joined the Hague Convention in March 2021, a US apostille is now sufficient authentication for most UAE purposes. No UAE Embassy legalization needed for most cases.
Certified Arabic translation (if required) UAE-accepted certified translator 2–3 business days UAE still commonly requires Arabic translation for employment, business registration, and family law matters, even when apostille is sufficient.
UAE MOFA attestation (specific cases only) UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Varies Some UAE authorities (particularly for employment and business registration) still request MOFA attestation. We advise whether this applies to your specific case.

How the process works

1

We assess whether apostille-only, apostille + translation, or apostille + MOFA attestation is needed for your specific UAE purpose. Employment, business, and family matters have different requirements.

2

We arrange notarization and state-level authentication for documents that require it before the federal apostille.

3

We obtain the US apostille — either from the Secretary of State (for state-issued documents) or from the US State Dept. (for federal documents). This is now the key authentication step for UAE.

4

We arrange certified Arabic translation. If your specific UAE purpose requires MOFA attestation, we coordinate that additional step as well.

Frequently asked questions

Does the UAE accept US apostilles since joining the Hague Convention in 2021?

Yes. The UAE acceded to the Hague Apostille Convention effective March 14, 2021. US apostilles (from the Secretary of State or US State Dept.) are now the standard authentication method for US documents used in the UAE. The old US-to-UAE consular chain (notarization → Sec. of State → US State Dept. → UAE Embassy → UAE MOFA) is no longer required for most purposes.

Are there any UAE purposes that still require more than just an apostille?

Some UAE authorities — particularly the Ministry of Human Resources for employment and certain free zone registrars — have been slow to fully transition. They may still request UAE MOFA attestation even for apostilled documents. We assess your specific UAE purpose and advise whether additional MOFA steps are needed.

Does the UAE still require Arabic translation of US documents?

Yes. While apostille handles the authentication requirement, the UAE still commonly requires certified Arabic translation for employment visas, business registration, and legal proceedings. Translation is in addition to apostille, not a replacement. We provide combined apostille + Arabic translation packages.

How long does UAE authentication of US documents take now (apostille route)?

With the apostille route: notarization (1–2 days) + Secretary of State (5–15 days) + US State Dept. apostille (expedited: 5–7 days) + Arabic translation (2–3 days) = approximately 2–4 weeks. This is significantly faster than the old 6–10 week consular chain.

My US document was apostilled for another country — can I use the same apostille for UAE?

An apostille is a certificate attached to or affixed on the document — it is not country-specific. The same apostille issued for, say, Spain, is also valid for UAE submission. However, if the apostille is on a separate page or sticker, ensure the original document and apostille are kept together.
